The Dental Implant Process

Getting dental implants typically involves several steps over the course of a few months. The process may vary slightly depending on the patient’s individual needs and the number of implants they need, but here is a general overview of what you can expect:

Consultation

At your first appointment, our dental team will evaluate your teeth, gums, and jawbone to determine if you're a good candidate for dental implants. We'll discuss your goals, answer any questions you have, and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Preparation

Before the implant can be placed, any damaged or decayed teeth will need to be removed, and the gums and jawbone will need to be prepared. This may include bone grafting or other procedures to ensure the implant has a strong foundation.

Implant placement

Once the jawbone is ready, the implant can be placed. Our skilled dentists will use special instruments to gently insert the implant into the jawbone. Depending on the patient's needs, this may be done under local anesthesia or IV sedation.

Healing

After the implant is placed, the healing process begins. It can take several weeks or months for the implant to fuse with the jawbone, creating a strong, stable foundation for the replacement tooth.

Abutment placement

Once the implant has healed, the abutment can be attached. This is a small connector piece that connects the implant to the replacement tooth.

Restoration

Finally, the replacement tooth (or teeth) can be attached to the abutment. This may involve a dental crown, bridge, or denture, depending on the number of missing teeth and the patient's needs.

I recently switched dentists because I needed an extraction (I thought) and my dentist wanted to refer me to a dental surgeon as she felt the tooth would be too difficult to extract. I decided I would try toothport dental in Angus, Ontario as I live in Angus. After a consultation with Dr. Nermine I decided upon a root canal. Because I am a senior with no dental benefits and have never had a root canal and was quite nervous Dr. Nermine set my mind at ease. She was easy to talk to, pleasant, understanding and she also gave me a small discount. I have to give two thumbs up for the dental assistant who was a blessing during the root canal! She constantly reassured me, asked me how I was doing, comforted me by touching my hand. I felt like I was in good hands at all times. Today my mouth feels good and I am glad I decided to switch to this dental office :)
