Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last four of 32 teeth to emerge and typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25. Due to lack of space in the mouth, they often get stuck in the gums and bones, which can lead to infections, damage to other teeth, and even tumours or cysts if left untreated. There are three types of impaction, soft tissue, partial bony, and complete bony impaction. If one or more wisdom teeth are impacted and not treated, they can cause damage to nearby teeth, disease, infection, and tooth crowding.
To determine whether wisdom teeth should be removed, a dental specialist will conduct a thorough examination of the wisdom teeth and surrounding teeth, and take x-rays to assess their position and the possibility of future issues. Early evaluation and treatment are recommended to avoid potential problems.
Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure that can be performed with local anaesthesia, IV sedation, or general anaesthesia. The surgery does not require an overnight stay, and post-operative instructions and medication may be given to help manage any swelling or discomfort.
